Several years ago, a senior executive told me something I’ll never forget.
“I’ve hired brilliant people who failed… and underestimated people who became transformational leaders.” After nearly three decades in executive search, I’ve heard versions of that statement countless times.
The résumé looked perfect.
The interview went well.
The references were outstanding.
Yet something didn’t translate into long-term success.
Why? Because traditional hiring processes often evaluate what someone has accomplished. Far fewer examine how that person actually thinks.
One of the best business examples comes from Netflix.
As the entertainment industry shifted from DVDs to streaming and eventually into original content, the company repeatedly reinvented itself.
Many organizations had access to similar technologies. Few had leadership willing to disrupt their own success before someone else did. That’s an entirely different capability. It’s not intelligence alone. It’s cognitive adaptability.
At OMT Human Capital, we believe the next generation of executive assessment must move beyond competency models toward thinking models.
Can a leader process conflicting information without becoming defensive? Can they challenge assumptions—even their own? Can they recognize patterns others miss? Can they combine analytical discipline with creativity?
Can they make decisions despite uncertainty? These are increasingly becoming leadership differentiators.
Our framework evaluates leadership through four interconnected lenses.
OpenMinded Thinking. Linear Thinking. Divergent Thinking. Lateral Thinking.
Together they provide a richer understanding of how leaders solve problems, inspire teams, and navigate complexity. The AI economy will reward leaders who continually reinvent themselves. Not because change is fashionable. Because change is becoming permanent. The organizations that succeed won’t necessarily hire the people with the most impressive careers. They’ll hire leaders with the greatest capacity to grow into challenges that don’t yet exist. That’s a fundamentally different hiring philosophy. And perhaps it’s time our leadership assessment models evolved to reflect it. The future isn’t asking for perfect leaders. It’s asking for adaptable ones.
At OMT, that’s exactly who we’re trying to identify.
